An apprentice is someone who learns a trade from a skilled employer. Apprentices are just like employees apart from the fact they work towards a formal qualification as well as doing work for the company. They have a genuine job role and a contract of employment. An apprenticeship is a way for an individual to learn valuable skills and knowledge through off-the-job training and in a work environment within their chosen industry.
Apprenticeships work by employers collaborating with training providers to provide a high-quality learning experience for a selected individual. An apprenticeship must last at least a year but its length is ultimately decided by the level and type of the course that the apprentice does alongside office work.
20% of the of the apprenticeship must consist of off-the-job training such as workshops or special training days. However, this is decided by the employer and the training provider. The main purpose of off-the-job training is for the apprentice to develop the necessary skills needed for them to complete their role within the workplace.
